I've never worked with MatLab, but have used octave:
www.octave.org
It's part of every major distro, and its homepage says
it's "mostly compatible with matlab". So if compatibility is
an issue, you might want to have a look at this because
the octave syntax -- and consequentially (?) the MatLab
syntax -- takes getting used to.
