SGI used to have a fantastic program for showing this, called bloatview.
It turns out they've open-sourced it (yay, SGI!) and it's now called
gmemusage: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/gmemusage/
The download link doesn't seem to work -- they say to browse the
code in gnome cvs, but maybe if you google you can find a tarball
or an rpm for your system.

I just tried it (from the debian package) and it looks a bit rough,
not as polished (yet?) as the Irix version, but it might get you
started.
