Try removing the new hard drive.  Does it boot now?

I've often seen drives not work well together on the same cable,
especially if one is Maxtor.  If your old drive boots without the new
one installed, try putting the new one on the secondary ide channel i.e.
/dev/hdc or /dev/hdd.
