[Techtalk] getting sound working

The only major feature of my new laptop that I haven't got working
is sound. I'm hoping you folks can give me some words of wisdom.
The laptop is a Sony VAIO PCG-TR3A.

# lspci | grep Audio
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB (ICH4)
AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

Fedora's system-config-soundcard tool gives the same output, along
with "Module: snd-intel8x0". But when I click its 'Play test
sound' button, I get nothing. I have checked in
gnome-volume-control and gnome-alsamixer that the sound isn't
muted or at unreasonably low levels.

Looking at dmesg output, the only sound-related things I see are:

application sox uses obsolete OSS audio interface
application firefox-bin uses obsolete OSS audio interface
