[Techtalk] Hot swap drive?

Further update.  This el-cheapo mobile rack can do hot-swap!  It's an
SNT-129A133 mobile rack purchased in Ireland for EUR18 and priced on the
net for similar dollars.  So long as you boot with the drive installed and
on, you can: unmount the drive, switch off and remove the drive, single
action using a key.  Attempting to access the drive once it's missing
cause trouble but that's expected.  To access the drive again, insert it,
switch it on and mount.  If the machine has been restarted without the
drive installed, a reboot will be necessary but not if the drive was
present at last boot.

I'm typing this on the machine that hosts the drive having just unplugged
it without shutting down.

The rack has some electronics in it, presumably to buffer any
connect/disconnect voltage spikes which are, I'm told, the most likely
source of problems...

Let's see how it behaves at next week's backup session...
