A good L3 switch is essentially a multi-ethernet port router. With the
rise of Metro Ethernet, L3 switches have built in QoS and other useful
stuff if that is ever needed (Stuff for layer 2 VPNs, bandwidth
management, full routing, etc).

Older ones are just short circuiting switches.
