Brenda, a driver for Linux is just a feature built into the kernel. You
can either compile this feature as a module, or as a part of the kernel,
to compile as a module would make a faster running OS. After saying that,
i don't know how mandrake handle's thing's, but for slackware, you would
open a file called 'rc.module' and uncommnt the needed module, this script
is run at startup, and it reside's in '/etc/rc.d' with the other startup
script's.

This did not work for me, so i had to set it up when i installed LILO as
part of the module's loaded at startup, this module was called
'ide-scsi'(only if the CDRW is IDE, i don't know about scsi), it emulate's
a scsi driver, but for ide. IF you already have LILO installed, don't want
to reinstall it, or just want to get your hand's dirty compiling your
kernel, i can point you to a good resource...
