I /think/ it's a safe bet to go for the best hardware possible. I used to 
use US Robotics & Motorolla modems & Creative Labs sound systems which were 
detected out of the box in RHL 6x. The best thing is you get quality 
performance & hardware detection is also not a problem under any platform.

Other than the Alsa Project (http://www.alsa-project.org) I wonder whether 
there's anything like (http://www.tomshardware.com) exist for Linux.
