My first high-speed internet connection was via an on-demand ISDN router. 
I was stupid enough to connect it to a W2K server and host my web site on
IIS.  It took the hackers 4 days to find me.  There's no such thing as
secure Internet connectivity without a firewall.  "If you build it, they
will come."
