There are some comments (particular comment 8) in
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45715
regarding how this might be implemented in Mozilla mail.
I suspect that the same code applies to Thunderbird -- that
it uses the same backend, just a different UI.  Anyway, that
might be of some help, and if you do try to implement this,
it's worth commenting in that bug, since other people who are
interested in reply-to-list (like me :-) are cc'ed there and you
might get some useful discussion or help if you had questions.
