Making them cheaper means that you have to build them cheaper, with
cheaper parts, and still try to make sufficient money to cover the hideous
cost of developing the hardware and software.  On top of this, the people
distributing them have to make sure that they make enough money to cover
the costs of their operation(s), and then the people that sell them have
to make enough money to actually support the costs involved in having
people and presence to sell them.

I'm in a position to get hold of them cheaper than a lot of people, but
it's not that much cheaper, and purely from knowing who charges a hideous
markup, who charges a sensible one, and from having bought rather a lot of
them already.

If you want cheap ones, it's worth spending time scouring ebay for old
second hand ones that have been discontinued.  They will usually still be
supported by the same software, but will be much cheaper.
