Update on my progress (or lack thereof):

I've tried just about every conceivable entry in /etc/hostname.xe0, 
but it refuses any "media" entries with ifmedia_match errors; even 
without any "media" entries, I continue to get the device timeout 
errors and no link light on the NIC.  I'm going to give up and call 
it a driver problem.
