I tried using stable on my development machine and found, shortly, that it
was *so* old that some of the libraries I needed weren't available.  

A new stable's been released since then, so I imagine you'll find more
people using it for production now than you would have if you'd asked a year
or so ago, or if you ask next year when stable's getting long in the tooth
again.
