If you're willing to spend some money on it, I would suggest GetDataBack.  
(http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm)  It has worked quite well for me and I think 
would be cheaper than a data recovery company.  


For Linux filesystems R-Linux (http://www.r-tt.com/RLinux.shtml) has also 
worked quite well for me.  I now back up religiously.  R-linux runs on 
Windows, but it's free.
