Ah, we hit the catch straight away :)

If a firewire host device isn't really expecting to supply power to an
external device, it will have a 4 pin firewire port to stop you from
doing this.

This is pretty much on purpose :)

But you still have the problem of where to extract the power from.  The
USB port is possible, but not neccesarily advisable.

Well, if your laptop isn't expecting to power an external device, is it
really wise to try to?  You will most likely severely reduce your run on
battery time.

I think the PC card won't supply power either :)

USB attachable Jaz drive :)
