Hi :) I've not done Linux from scratch, but I've installed & am running
Gentoo currently on my home box. I really like the Gentoo portage install
management system. The distro IMO brings the benefits of Linux from
scratch (things being customized for my box) together with a bit more
ease of setup and maintenance. The website has excellent documentation &
the forums are a good source of help. http://www.gentoo.org.

The only difficulty I ran into with Gentoo when installing was that the
1.4rc2 boot CD did not recognize my network card, so I couldn't get DHCP
running. The workaround, should you run into any difficulties with the
current 1.4rc4 boot CD is to install from the 1.2 boot CD and use the
most current Stage tarballs (those are the tarballs that contain the rest
of the setup stuff).

One of the best things I like about Gentoo is being freed from RPM
problems. I don't run into Catch-22 loops of library dependencies like I
did with RPM distros (I've used RedHat & Mandrake). Also, if there's an
application that is not in the portage tree, I can always install it
myself from tarball / source and not break any RPM database.
