We currently use cfengine but not for software updates specifically.
It's used as part of our kickstart to copy standard config files to the
newly-kickstarted box (like sendmail.cf, ntp.conf, etc). It's very
powerful and flexible.
I was trying to use it to push updates out to boxes but we have had lots of
problems with cfd just stopping. cfd must be running to push updates to
the box. Also, there are no RedHat RPMs available so we use the mandrake
ones which can occasionally cause problems. We are still running 1.x so
quite possibly some of these things have been fixed in 2.x. It's worth
a look, though, to see what it can do for you.
The nice thing about apt is its dependency-checking/resolution. You
wouldn't get that with cfengine.
