[Techtalk] ADSL modems

Berenice,

The most important point is to get an ADSL modem that matches whatever your
ISP/Telco is using at their end. While all ADSL modems are theoretically
interoperable, various manufacturers interpreted the spec differently. So
while any modem should work, there may be some degradation in transmission
speed if the two aren't well-matched.

(No, I'm not an ADSL expert, but I happen to have married one. :-)

In my home network we have the telco's modem du jour (a Westell WireSpeed, now
a couple of years old and therefore antique), and a separate Linksys router.
They work well together. We do use the router's firewall.
