[Techtalk] Internet connection weirdness

Hi -

I've been running SuSE 8.0 and recently installed Slackware 8.1. Most everything is running just fine, but I began noticing that there were several web pages that would not load. At first I thought they were just dead links, but then I tried a local news site that I use frequently, and that wouldn't load. When I booted back into SuSE, it loaded just fine.

My neice was visiting for the weekend, so she helped me do some troubleshooting. This is what we got when we ran a traceroute:

traceroute to madison.com (64.73.25.70), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
 1 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms
 2 redback.madison.chorus.net (216.165.182.1) 22 ms 21 ms 26 ms
 3 mdsnwibrdr1.transit.tds.net (216.165.129.186) 27 ms 22 ms 25 ms
 4 mdsnwicore2.transit.tds.net (216.165.131.34) 25 ms 26 ms 26 ms
 5 uw-binc-gw.net.wisc.edu (144.92.233.231) 27 ms 26 ms 26 ms
 6 msfc-a2-core1.binc.net (64.73.0.2) 27 ms 25 ms 26 ms

Now, the weird thing is, I thought I'd try traceroute from my SuSE installation, where the website loads and updates just fine, and I got the same result.

Some more weirdness - doing an nslookup yielded some strange results:

eraasch at xalice:~> nslookup madison.com
Server: ns1.chorus.net
Address: 216.165.128.161

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: madison.com
Address: 64.73.25.70

eraasch at xalice:~> nslookup 64.73.25.70
Server: ns1.chorus.net
Address: 216.165.128.161

Name: millionaire.madison.com
Address: 64.73.25.70

When I enter millionaire.madison.com into the address bar of my browser, it takes me to the site of an interactive auction that was sponsored by madison.com, and which is apparently part of the madison.com site.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior, and more importantly, is there anything I can do that will allow me to access these apparently unavailable sites from my Slackware partition?

Thanks!

Erin Raasch
