Actually, Perl for Dummies is one book I don't own... ;)  My favorite "teach 
yourself" type book is out of print - "Discover Perl 5" by Naba Barkakati, 
(It's the one I learned from in 1998).

The idea for a spin off list has been brought up (perltalk?), although 
initially I was planning on writing short lessons for courses, and then 
playing Q&A.
