hi Conor, thanks so much...
yup, that must be it... first time i did NFS it was late at night, and i
forgot to umount before shutting the machine down.... for some reason i
managed to get wembly (desktop) to mount hamish but not the other way
round (err oops with those names this sounds most perculiar!...)
so i got things transferred... but hadnt figured out why... presumably i
managed to clean rmtab somehow on the desktop machine...

it should work now... according to what you've said - because i've just
replaced the hard drive in the laptop.... so i've got a fresh install,
no spurious rmtab entries lying about.... but i'll certainly find your
script very helpful now :)
