Our backup software was failing with RedHat's 2.4.8-14. That we 
did not see in 2.4.8-10.  Details at

Our programmer got around it by imitating some ideas in the source of 
procps.

So without knowing much about the ins and outs of various kernels, I would 
weigh in for 2.4.8-10 having had good experience with it on various intel 
machines.
