Hi Shari,
The first thing I wanted to recommend was a view of the Dell
documentation.
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/pcyp/specs.htm#video
(I used to support Dell with Windows, I get around their site pretty
quickly!)
If you have the 14.1" display, 1024x768 looks like the highest
resolution you will get.. It's denoted as XGA Active Matrix Color.
I assumed you had this size display because of the resolution. The
specs indicate that there is also a 12.1" display that is SVGA Active
Matrix Color, but only gets a max res of 800x600.
On my desktop machine, I have this really garbage generic 15" monitor
that gets up to 1280x1024. I also from time to time get a
"jiggling" effect, which seems to go away when the monitor's been on
a while. I can't tell you it's necessarily good or bad, it's just
something I live with. Maybe someone will tell me that's damaging my
monitor - but so far I haven't heard anything bad about the jigglies.
An external monitor capable of higher resolutions should work fine,
if you want to go to 1280x1024 or 1600x1200.
Which distro are you using? In Mandrake, the Mandrake Control
Center allows me to use a GUI to configure and choose the resolution
and type of monitor, and of course, perform a test of the settings
before accepting.
Let me know if I caused you to have more questions!
