[Techtalk] Etymology: Pooched

Yep, I'd put money that it's a descendant of military/NASA "screwed the
pooch"....not nearly as interesting sounding as a more obscure NASA-ism I
picked up years ago of "seeing the green weenie" = dead. (applied to
software/hardware, not people that I know of....."Yep, I think this
motherboard has seen the green weenie" = it's utterly, totally dead, don't
waste any more time on it, replace it.)

Phrases tend to acquire descendant variations, such as "casters to the
sunshine" as a variant of "belly up" (one of my favorites)...I enjoy
collecting them.
