Thank you so much! That was really, really helpful. The
original question wasn't mine, but this explained and helped me fix some
interoperability problems I'd been having with vi. Vi on a BSD server
responded totally differently to keystrokes from KDE's kvt on Solaris
and kvt on Linux (same version of KDE), and I couldn't for the life of
me figure out why backspace would work on one and not on the other.
Knowing where to look, I fixed it right up.
