Well... have you installed other ports in the past without problems?  Have
you ever installed anything *not* from ports (that might have messed with
the libraries)?  And, what version FreeBSD is it, and have you ever used
cvsup to upgrade it?

I'm woefully ignorant of the workings of libraries etc., but it does sound
like something (besides Perl) has gotten mis-installed on your system, and
maybe we can figure out what.
