My fave is apt-get -s <screw-my-machine, debian> -- particularly
useful when doing a simple install. Sometimes you think you're going to
install a single package, only to find out the dependencies fire off a
cascade that upgrades your entire system, and this may not be the
appropriate time... (not true with the current stable system, of course,
whatever that is at the time).
