More questions than answers, but I can't extract enough from your post
to help yet...

How are you starting the program? When you run it from the command line,
are any error messages displayed in the terminal window (GTK warnings,
for example)? Does any part of the program start up correctly (i.e. is
it just the display portion that is broken, or is the whole application
failing)?
