That should work - are you using Squid as an accelerator or as a 
proxy server?

Be aware that Squid is, by default, designed to be either always 
connected or always disconnected. O'Reilly has an article explaining 
how to use Squid behind a dialup connected, this requires a patch which 
is linked to in the article. (A comment updates that link). Go to
http://www.oreilly.com/ and search for Squid. There are several Squid
articles - you might find more than just the one useful.
