Looks like the answer is 3com NICs.  I mean, most every said
something good about them ;-)

I just can't believe how many problems I've had with them.  They
have got to be the =worst= adapter card of any type I've ever bought
in 20+ years of being a geek.  And I've got, like, half a dozen of
them in the house ...

In all fairness, I think the problem is having two of them in my
gateway box.  The machines with just one don't have problems ...
