I like 3com and D-Link NICs.
I'm not saying those are "the best" but I haven't had many troubles with
the brands mentioned.  I think about any 3com will work with Linux.
IIRC not all D-Links do.  I use D-Link 528s at home.  They work great
with Linux but are only 10T cards.
