[techtalk] ssh woes/mysteries

Hi Folks,
I'm having some trouble with ssh/sshd, in a way that is totally
mysterious to me. There are also some other server weirdnesses that
might be related, but they may be coincidences.
I've been happily sshing to this server from my home mac and linux
box for months now. All of a sudden, I can't. I get the following
error from the linux box (the mac Nifty telnet window just opens and
closes): ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
Now my bit of research suggests that this has to do with ssh1 and
ssh2 not talking with one another, or something like that. Except, no
changes have been made on either side! I didn't upgrade Nifty telnet,
nor has sshd on the server changed. But something I could do
yesterday I can't today. However, I can ssh from a different outside
machine, like I always could.
The strange part, is I also can't ssh into that box from a Mac OS X
machine that sits next to it. But other linux boxes on the network
work fine.
Other strangenesses: IMAP stopped working, as well as netatalk. But
POP, FTP and apache work fine. I restarted processes, and re-booted
the machine, too.
And doing a port scan suggests that the ssh, imap and afpovertcp
(appletalk) ports are open and ready. The processes (sshd, afpd) are
running.
I'm stumped, totally. Suggestions?
Michelle
