[techtalk] Can the boot up screen be replaced?

In rh6.2 it's still the same - they are overwritten in /etc/rc.d/rc.local 
at startup. If you don't like it, you might as well comment it out and
change /etc/issue. /etc/motd (message of the day) is for text shown
_after_ succesful login.
