Well, if you're running RedHat, mouse type is located in
/etc/sysconfig/mouse file, and you can either edit it manually or run

  # setup

or

  # mouseconfig

while logged in as root in text mode.

If you read this file you can see line like

  MOUSECFG=/etc/sysconfig/mouse
and follow it. That's what I did to find the information described
above.

Yes, maybe gpm is wrong with imps. Try to find gpm homepage (maybe using
freshmeat.net) and read what do they tell about imps mouse.

PS Linux makes us think deep, and that's great!
