A few questions:
* Does /dev/sda4 exist? 
* What are the major and minor device numbers for /dev/sda4? (use ls -l)
  Is it a block device (the ls line should start with a 'b', not a 'c')
* Does your kernel support that major device? (look in /proc/devices)
