I don't have a lot more to provide, at least not without a lot more
digging (which I don't have time to do, I have to run this code over a
million documents in the next two weeks -- oh lord!)

The program is the GATE project (http://gate.ac.uk) and the error was
being thrown by a modified version of their StandAloneAnnie tagger, for
people familiar with the project (not that I expect you to be!) The
code base is pretty significant and the architecture complex. I wish I
had time for a little detective work but alas I don't.
