Thanks, Elizabeth and Mary, your answers were very helpfull.
I will read them over a few times to try and understand it properly.

I just found Stroustup's book t"he C++ programming  language"for sale at 
Everything Linux.  So I have ordered it, inthe hope that it will be helpfull  
I don't know how much help it will be as a beginner, but it will be a good 
reference even if it is over my head at the moment!  It should turn up 
sometime next week.
