[prog] SVG?

just been reading about SVG
i'm wondering if its worth learning or if its all going to be a flash in 
the pan (pun intended) like VRML was?....
at the moment i've been designing interactive environments in Macromedia 
Flash but i want to move to a non-proprietary format...
also as you can control SVG with javascript it might be useful for 
non-web based / non-browser based work...
does anyone know if it can be controlled by any languages other than 
javascript?..... i gather its an offshoot of XML....
