[prog] tcsh script problem, involving awk

The back-quote is quite a tricky thing to notice if you have bad eyesight.  I 
make that mistake from time to time.  Also when I first encountered it I 
didn't believe I had one one my keyboard because it is tucked out of the way 
there!
