Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) opens search for Director of
the Professional Masters Program in Human-Computer Interaction (MHCI)*
The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) in the School of
Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for
the position of Director of the world-renowned professional Masters in
Human-Computer Interaction (MHCI), to begin in the fall term of 2013 or
earlier. This position is a career-oriented appointment for a dedicated,
passionate advocate of human-centered design methods to change the world
through training the next generation of HCI professionals.
The Director will continue our tradition of innovating and expanding on
the MHCI curriculum, mentor students to prepare them for professional
roles in the human computer interaction field, act as a liaison to other
academic departments and our industry capstone sponsors, communicate
with the public, and in other ways ensure the continued quality and
reputation of the MHCI. The director will also assist in managing
relations with the strong and exuberant alumni base of the MHCI, and
recruiting new students who will enrich our community.
The Human-Computer Interaction Institute was the first department of HCI
in the country, and opened the Masters in Human-Computer Interaction in
1994. Since then it has graduated more than 500 alumni who have gone on
to work at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IDEO, Pixar, Apple, IBM,
NASA, Boeing, Mozilla, Bloomberg, Nokia, Yahoo, Adobe, Frog Design, SRI,
Autodesk, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, and Oracle, just to name a few. Over
the past 19 years several of our alumni have come home to teach in the
MHCI, and 2 have become Directors.
The new Director will become an integral part of the vibrant HCII
community at CMU.In addition to its celebrated faculty, and the
intellectual acumen of its students, the HCII is known for its warm
atmosphere and generosity of spirit. The new Director will be expected
to keep an open door for students, and to participate in fostering the
both rigorous and mutually-supportive atmosphere for which the MHCI is
known.
Applicants for the Director position must have an MHCI, MFA, MS, or
Ph.D. in one of the main disciplines of HCI (HCI, computer science,
design, psychology or another social science) or a related field, and
have familiarity with research and evaluation methods and user-centered
design, as well as leadership skills. Preference will be given to
candidates with professional experience in the field of HCI or design.
Teaching experience is also preferred.
