Junior Linux Systems Administrator
Description: As a team member of a fast-growing small web hosting
company, you will be responsible for testing and deploying new
hardware and software in a datacenter environment. You will also be
responsible for responding to customer support requests via our
helpdesk in a timely manner.
Your main responsibilities will include:
Building and deploying servers (installing Linux or Windows; setting
network configurations; installing patches to bring the servers up to
date; configuring firewalls and backup systems upon customer request);
Troubleshooting and fixing hardware that has broken (can include
anything from swapping out motherboards and hard drives to determining
why a server will not boot);
Physically rack-mounting servers at the datacenter and arranging
network and power cables appropriately;
Patching current servers to make them less vulnerable to security problems;
Responding to customer requests and support tickets of an
administrative nature (such as installing new software to meet
customer requests or setting up a firewall on a customer server);
Additional support/administrative duties as required by our company.
Required skills:
Experience with web hosting control panels such as cPanel, Plesk,
Ensim, or DirectAdmin;
1-2 years Linux system administration experience;
PHP and Perl scripting;
MySQL database administration;
Experience building, troubleshooting, and maintaining computers that
are custom-built (you will be building a lot of hardware, so don't
apply if you don't like building PCs!);
Experience with the following pieces of software: Apache;
Exim/Sendmail; BIND; NFS; FTP; NTP; APF;
"Neat freak" who admires good cabling;
Enjoys working with both hardware and software; a quick learner who
enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred skills:
Experience with Netscreen firewalls;
Experience with Cisco switches;
JSP/Tomcat administration experience;
Windows 2003 server administration experience.
This is a full-time position that carries an hourly rate (not
salaried, since your work hours will vary from week to week, and some
weeks you will be working more than 40 hours.) Some "on-call" evening
and weekend work will be required. On-call work will carry a higher
hourly rate. Employment benefits include a free colocation package or
dedicated server package for you to use as long as you remain an
employee.
You must be located in or near downtown San Jose (within a 20-minute
