GNUKhata Release Candidate is out

GNUKhata is a free accounting and inventory software, a project in
progress at Comet Media Foundation, Mumbai with support from the
National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).

A large number of organisations, both commercial and non-commercial
are shifting their ICT implementations to Free and Open Source
Software (FOSS). There are various reasons for this trend, some of the
most prominent being huge cost savings, freedom to customise the
software, not to mention the virus free nature of the GNU/Linux free
Operating System (OS).

However at the level of enterprises there has been a major stumbling
block holding up such switch-overs. Free software lacks good
accounting and financial software comparable to commercial ones.
GNUKhata aims to fill this gap by providing a complete flexible
accounting and inventory software which is also free of any software
license charges.

GNUKhata can be deployed by anyone needing to keep track of accounts:
individuals, profit-making and non-profit organisations. This
lightweight FOSS-based accounting software is robust and scales up to
large volumes of data. GNUKhata has a modular structure, facilitating
addition of extensions for different tasks.

The user interface is designed to be intuitive and friendly for
beginners. Deployers will find the implementation easy, due to its
dynamic deployment user interface. The advantage of the software is
that it will support a wide range of services such as point of sales
operations and tracking of multiple small transactions. It is
conceived as a package which will cater to the accounting needs of
both the corporate and social sectors.

Currently GNUKhata is under heavy development as its timeline at
http://gnukhata.gnulinux.in shows. It is in its alpha stage, with the
Inventory and Accounting modules both reaching the end of the first
production cycle and we are now ready to share the Release Candidate
with you.

GNUKhata is released by Comet Media Foundation under the GNU General
Public License version 3. For details on GNU General Public License
version 3 visit

states that the software can be freely used, modified and
re-distributed, provided the same rights are passed onto every user
who installs the copy.

In the long run, GNUKhata aims to be a comprehensive accounting and
financial software possessing a unique feature: a peer-to-peer (P2P)
deployment framework which can help non-technical users to perform
case studies and do implementations at their places of work, using
existing modules.

Projecting into the future, our wish list includes creating web-based
clients and mobile front ends and auto bug-tracking systems. These are
easily do-able given the fact that the core system has been developed
as a middle layer service which provides uniform interfaces for all
kinds of front-ends.

Doubtlessly, many innovative ideas will emerge once users get their
hands on GNUKhata, and the platform-independent nature of the system
architecture will open out a myriad possibilities. This is the
rationale for the early release: that the constructive feedback
generated by people like you will lead to a stable release soon.
