And sometimes it can be a HD problem too (bad sectors?), do check the
disk or simply format and reinstall again (easiest but after you have
copied your data on a pendrive,)

Remember to install Windows _before_ any Linux flavour. If you have
around 80 GB you can keep atleast 3 Linux distros dualbooted with
Windows...... and while you are at it do a memory test too :)
