Maybe I wasn't clear enough. But often people like to do
what they find equivalent of fun according to them. Some others like
to itch their own scratch. Say, you would like Physics for some
reason, then you probably can look at an application called "Step" - a
superb physics simulator. Or maybe, you would like astronomy - so
"Stellarium" or "KStars" is something you can look at. One of the
current SoC dudes is an amature astronomer, he scratched his itch by
submitting patches to KStars for some time. These days he is busy
making sure KStars can be used to see billions of stars instead of
thousands of stars. He already successfully worked on the million part
;). Anyway, then maybe you might be interested in something else
completely - im apps, email clients, browser, office applications and
many many more such.

Some people learn new stuff ( specific to some domain )
at work/school/on their own - you can map that to some foss app that
you use and implement a certain thing for the foss app. Example -
there is nice dude in Bangalore - Tejas - he learnt a lot of "im
protocols" ( aka some domain ) or such in a brief internship stint at
a places which is famous for making IM clients/Radio and such. He used
that expertise to implement Bon Jour client for Kopete.

Hope that clarifies what I meant earlier.

            Cheers!
