Bugzilla bugs that look interesting are a good entry point, as has
already been pointed out. Unless you're talking about arch-specific,
or kernel-specific issues, you're probably fine in a VM.

I don't know if this is up your alley, but if automated testing is
interesting to you, you can look at LDTP (the Linux Desktop Testing
Project -- http://ldtp.freedesktop.org/wiki/) and LTP (the Linux
Testing Project -- http://ltp.sourceforge.net/).
