Computers are my hobby, but since I'm using Linux/Ubuntu (about one
year) I'm trying to get more serious. I love the open source
philosophy and being able to get away from Moloch MS, multiplied my
enthousiasm. Especially since I've got a new PC two months ago, my
first ever PC with up to date specs, since I started in '94. I'm
reading a lot, in Open Source resources and Wikipedia. My knowledge
is rather limited, but I can install OS's (also double-boot),
applications, our home network, new hardware etc, so I cope
(maintaining 5 PC's at home and for family).
Since two months I'm member of Linuxchix. When Michelle offered this
course it was a good chance for me to finally learn about database
management and widen my use of the computer. Through Wikipedia I'm
trying to get some back-ground information on DBM, to help me
understand the course.
We're living near Amsterdam, Holland. I'm mom of three teenagers and a
former social worker.

"If you haven't already, think of a concrete project you'd like to use
PG with. Share with us a brief synopsis of the project: the problem, the
platform, the approach you'll think you'll take, and why you think PG
might be a good fit. It should be something that will be fun, and
perhaps a bit challenging for you."

My dream has always been to build and manage a database on breeding
horses. Though the horses faded into the background, because of the
children. Perhaps this course will give a good opportunity to once
fulfill that dream. As for now, I'd like to make a database from the
items I've written at writing.com and some items of friends as well.
To follow the views, comments, ratings etc over a period of time. I
think there are enough data to collect, to make it a rather
substantial DB, suitable for this course.

Wishing all an inspiring course

Maria
