Another thing you can potentially do here is make a duplicate of the
image. You could of course do this by just making a copy of the file,
but GIMP can make a duplicate itself -- just the same image in a new
window. In GIMP 2, you go to the menu, select images and the
"Duplicate".

A second window will open up with the same image in it. Do keep an eye
on the title bars at the top of the image: one will have the original
file name in it, the other will have "Untitled-1.0" or something.

Anyway, thought I'd point this out because when I'm using different
techniques on an image, I like to open up a duplicate or two and try
them out separately.
