Goodness. Whilst I can mess up my kernel compiles with the best,
programming is a closed book to me.

Well it is possible (recommended, maybe even the default) that 
you have to tell the machine about the new kernel and specifically
tell it to boot into it. If you don't tell the box to use the new
kernel, it will use the old working one. 

So the worst that can happen isn't that bad really: one failed boot :) 
Or you boot and discover you have no network; or so on.

Carla started this thread; and there was a thread Val started a -- 
wow, can it be a couple of years ago now? -- some time back which 
is in the archives about how to build a kernel. I think it's still
prominently linked on the Linuxchix web pages.
