:)  I'll be pretty busy with honours this year, so I'll just be a 
lurker.  However, I'll purchase and use the recommended text - I'm also 
in favour of a linux/unix environment oriented toward beginners.

I like email as the main forum, but a dedicated irc channel could be 
useful! and fun to get feedback in real time :)
