[Announce] Linuxchix Africa - Software Freedom Day

Linuxchix Africa will be participating in the Software Freedom Day 
celebrations planned for the 10th September 2005.  Several studies have shown 
that not only are there few women in ICT, there are even fewer women with 
FOSS and Linux skills, especially when one looks at the technical side and at 
Africa in general. Our strategy for addressing these challenges has been to 
work in partnerships with existing organisations to mainstream gender into 
their programs and to build capacity for women, either by organising training 
workshops ourselves or by sending them to various training workshops. We are 
also continuously raising FOSS awareness amongst women, especially high 
school and university students.

The Software Freedom Day (SFD) presents Linuxchix Africa with an opportunity 
to publicize Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and get more women involved 
in the activities planned. Linuxchix Africa have planned the SFD celebrations 
for Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, and South Africa. The information about 
these country events is as follows:

1. Cameroon: Protege QV, Yaounde, Contact Sylvie Siyam at

The common theme for the day's programmes will revolve around presentations 
on the use of FOSS in areas like Education, Business and Civil Society, and 
Health; distribution of Linux and OpenOffice CDs, magazines and T-shirts and 
demonstration of a  “live” FOSS environment. Women in education, business and 
civil society are welcome, as well as high school and university students.

Linuxchix Afrique prendra part à la commémoration de la journée de liberté du 
logiciel prévues pour le 10 septembre 2005. De nombreuses cas d’études ont 
montré que non seulement il y a peu de femmes dans les NTIC, il y a même très 
peu de femmes avec des expertises en logiciel libre (FOSS) et Linux, 
particulièrement si on considère le côté technique et l'Afrique en général. 
Notre stratégie pour répondre à ces défis a été de travailler avec des 
associations avec des organismes existants pour introduire le genre  dans 
leurs programmes coutumiers et de renforcer à la capacité des femmes, soit en 
organisant nous-même des ateliers de formation en les envoyant à de divers 
ateliers de formation. Nous continuons de même à conscientiser femmes, 
surtout les lycéennes et les étudiantes, à popos de FOSS. 

La journée de liberté du logiciel (SFD) présente Linuxchix Afrique avec une 
occasion de faire la publicité du logiciel libre (FOSS) et d’impliquer plus 
de femmes dans les activités programmées. Linuxchix Afrique projette célébrer 
la SFD au Cameroun, en Côte d'Ivoire, au Kenya, et en Afrique du Sud. Pour

Le thème commun pour le programmes du jour portera sur des présentations sur 
l'utilisation de FOSS dans les secteurs de l'éducation, des affaires, de la 
société civile, et de la santé ; la distribution de CD Linux et OpenOffice, 
des les magasines et des T-shirts et la démonstration d’un environnement 
dynamique FOSS. Toutes les femmes des divers secteurs (l'éducation,  affaires 
et  société civile) sont cordiallement invitees, de même que les  lycéennes 
et les étudiantes. Toute personne  intéressée à apporter une aide ou à
